Lion Tamer: On Taming the Tongue (Archimandrite Vassilios Bakoyiannis)

“Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; Keep watch over the door of my lips” (Ps. 141:2).

“…Let’s say, that the Government has attached to us a mechanism (like a camera), that records whatever is coming out of our mouths. And we know that if we say a word that is not liked by the Government, that we will pay a fine, for example one thousand dollars. What are we going to do? Will we not pay attention to our words? Will we not be vigilant all around the clock? Of course, we will! You see, when there is a reason to bridle the “beast”, we can do it, if we want…” (Pg. 17).

Apostle James (3:1-10)

“My brethren, …if anyone does not stumble in word, he is a perfect man…, every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and creature of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by mankind, but no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so” . Let’s pray this book makes us a lion tamer…!
