It was a Sunday afternoon when Miriam, being in “the dwelling place of Joseph,” received an unexpected visit from Archangel Gabriel! He said to Her, “Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women.” (Luke 1:28) This book is a collection of relevant “information” that our Holy Fathers and hymnographers of our Church, handed down to us, on the Mother of the Lord.

“We see the holy Virgin, as a light-bearing torch who brings light to those in darkness…” (Salutations. 4th stanza)

“…Archangel Gabriel told Her, “Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women” (Lk. 1:28). No one has heard such words, such compliments, even from an Archangel! (…) What woman would not swell with pride, hearing such words, especially from an Archangel? But ‘Mariam was troubled’ (Lk. 1:29). When the Archangel made Her the most honorable proposal that could be made to an Israelite woman (to become the Mother of the Messiah), instead of going out into the neighborhoods to spread the news, and being praised by the people, Mariam said nothing to anyone…! Not even to her husband Joseph…! The mouth cannot be kept shut, especially in such cases!…” (Pg. 73,74).

Preface

We say for the Theotokos: “Rejoice, depth that is too strenuous for Angels’ eyes to perceive” (Salutations. 1st Stanza). And to enter into this “depth that is too strenuous to perceive” you need spiritual clarity, you need the Holy Spirit.

“I opened my mouth and drew in my breath” (Ps. 119:131). Open, clean your soul’s mouth (= the intellect) and “draw in” the Holy Spirit, and having the Holy Spirit you will be able to talk about the Theotokos. “My mouth shall I open up, and by the Spirit shall it be filled; and words shall pour forth from me unto the Mother and Queen,” we chant in the church.

We are not Saints. We have simply collected the relevant “information” that our Holy Fathers and hymnographers of our Church gave us on the Mother of the Lord, and we present them in this book, for the benefit of our brothers and sisters in Christ.

The Greek author, the Archimandrite Vassilios Bakoyiannis was born in 1953. He is a graduate of the Theological Academy of Athens and of the Theological School of the University of Belgrade. He received his M.A. in Theology from St. Vladimir’s Seminary and his Ph.D. from the Atlantic International University (U.S.A.). In 1974 he began writing and since then has written over 50 spiritual books. The publication of his books in Greece has been exclusively undertaken by “Thavor” publications, which have been exclusively established for this purpose and for which he exclusively writes. Several of his books have been translated from the Greek language into English, German, Italian, Russian, Romanian, Arabic, Serbian, Bulgarian, Indonesian, Swahili. He was ordained in 1980 and serves the Holy Metropolis of Patras in Greece.
